I Don’t Know The Known (Ocean Beach), 2013 acrylic on 71.5cm x 50.5cm canvas
Though I happily live in Oakland and I am generally apprehensive to cross the river Styx into the (hellmouth) city of my birth, San Francisco, Ocean Beach, at the end of the continent, at times draws me out and is always the key to myriad locks.

Formidable (For Me Dah), 2012 acrylic  ~4.26 m x 7.62m
This is my first mural and is located on Shannon Street, in San Francisco’s Tenderloin 94102. Formidable (For Me Dah) recounts my father’s formidable 30 year career in the US Army, from his start as the first Black commissioned officer to graduate from The University of Texas’ AROTC in 1961 to his retirement as a COL and Chief of Staff of The United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command in 1991.

This is Ed and Christina. They’re a very charming couple. What makes a charming couple? When the sum can be divided into two equally rad parts. While the two have been in Austin for over a decade, I originally met them as Bay Area transplants. Ed and Christina’s insights, as to which areas of Oakland would be most suitable for me, were very helpful when I was looking for a place to inhabit. Here they are pictured with Buena Vista Matchbook Cover (Morning Fog) II , which I presented to them as a thank you for their help and for inviting me to their house the evening this photo was taken.

While looking at a website of events that occurred on my birthday I discovered that on September 19, 1975, my first birthday, Patricia Hearst was booked by the San Mateo County Sheriffs for her role in a string of armed robberies. Curious because she was actually arrested in San Francisco, the city of my birth. After a few hours of research I discovered that I currently live five miles away from the apartment Hearst, 19,was abducted from that she shared with her 26 year old grad student fiancé. The story and trail of Patty Hearst is extremely interesting and a pivotal point in celebrity pop culture as well as US legal history. Hearst along with Brigid Berlin, whose father worked for the Hearst Corporation, were pioneers of the 20th-21st century phenomena of rich kids “fucking it up.” While it has become common place, no heir/heiress had hitherto or henceforth taken their “fucking it up” to such an ultimate level. A true Bay Area icon. Study for Patricia Hearst Mugshot, 2011, is a sketch for a canvas piece I’m planning to execute later this year.
