This is Tom. He’s a long-time friend, a native Texan, a fellow former military brat and an extremely talented cook/charcutier/barbecuer. Last October, as Tom was preparing to fulfill his dream of opening is own barbecue location, he asked me if I would be interested in painting on his trailer. Being that I am a great fan of his barbecue and avid supporter of my friends making moves, I jumped at the opportunity to show my support and be associated with such quality product. In November, I went down to Austin and painted his trailer. I didn’t have any preliminary sketches but after a couple of beers with Tom we quickly agreed on what was going to happen. I can’t endorse Micklethwait Craft Meats strongly enough. Austin and the surrounding area has a lot of bbq…some better than others, and MCM is truly one of the greatest. From the various styles of ribs to the brisket…from the pork shoulder to the daily variety of sausages…from the potato salad and cole slaw to the house made pickles and house made sauce (not needed, yet a magnificent embellishment)…it’s all superlative.

This is Dan. We are similar in ways and different in others. Perhaps that’s why he acquired I Can’t Be Fired, Slaves Are Sold , (2010) . Dan’s a smart, aware pioneer and a long time friend. Tim Kerr (Second Version), 2010 61cm x 101cm acrylic and charcoal on cardboard
To date I’ve done only a handful of portraits depicting people of renown and only a handful of portraits of folks I know. This piece is one of two in the cross-section. Back in 2010…(click me and I will take you to an explanation). While I was painting the other one I decided it would be very clever of me to make two different pieces in homage to the double volume compilation, Skinny Elvis and Fat Elvis, that one of Tim’s bands, The Big Boys released.
This is Michael. He’s an intelligent and engaging conversationalist, a real hep cat. He likes the jazz, the blues and the old country and western musics, which on occasion, we discuss over low balls during my trips home to Austin. He’s also a talented writer/director and father of two outstanding young women. Michael acquired Seated Nude Without Necklace (After Modigliani, Seated Nude With Necklace), 2003 in 2006 during a garage sale conveniently held in his front yard.
This is Tim. If I were a bricks and mortar business, he would have just become the mayor of dutchslavetrade. I believe Tim has acquired around eleven or so works over the last few years. The remarkable thing is that all the pieces he has are ones that I almost didn’t put up for sale. Paintings that I thought were either “important” in my development, especially unique or just fond of for some other reason. He seems to have a good (dead)eye(s) for these things. Don’t Let Your Emotions Straddle Events, 2008 is one such piece. So if this art shit ever pans out for me and someone reading this blog, long after I’ve transformed into a beam of light, plans to curate a show of my self-declared “hits”…contact this nerd.

When things don’t go as planned, you must hold it down. When you start to feel yr ghost getting away from you, you must hold it down. When your caught unprepared, you must hold it down. When a sucka tries to test, you must hold it down. When you step onto the dance floor, you must hold it down. You simply must hold it down. Otherwise, what’s the point?

At some point in 2006 Bill Jeffery asked me and my friend Renee to join him in showing work at a friend of his’ store. I think it was a clothing/vintage or craft/record/fanzine store or something. (They’re around.) He also asked our mutual friend’s band, Yellow Fever to play. They did a ingenious cover of “It Wasn’t Me” by Shaggy. The whole deal was a blast. Lots of shitty wine and I moved a lot of left over from college paper units, freeing me of burden and filling my coffers, both needed as I was about to move.

I usually forget that I can record video with my mobile, however a couple of days ago while sitting with a friend at a picnic table, I remembered. My friend and I were approached by a man seeking alms named David Jones. As this happens frequently I have come up with a set of guidelines to determine how I will react to these encounters. Mr. Jones’ approach and demeanor was unique enough for me to want to engage with him and I’m extremely glad that I did. With his permission I recorded him reciting one of his poems.
