These Ladies Are Straight Gettin’ Their Kathy Womack On,  2011 18cm x18cm graphite on 65lb paper
If you lived in Austin, Dallas or Houston in the last twenty years you’ve probably been exposed to the works of Kathy Womack. If not click on that link back there. Her gallery is located in Austin, not far from the old Sweatbox Studios on East 5th. On the few occasions I had to be at Sweatbox, when I wasn’t required to lay down an alto clarinet, vocal or hand clap track, I’d wander the area looking for food. Frequently I would stop in front of the Womack Gallery and look at her work. Like a Dickensian street urchin on Christmas Eve, I would press my sallow face and mustard-stained hands (I ate a lot of hot dogs) against the window and peer into the rich warm toned world of Kathy Womack. “These laughing women clutching glasses of wine, carefree, in lush amber and golden hues do not reflect my world.” I thought to myself as my hot dog breath steamed up the window. They were reflecting somebody’s world however, actual or desired, as she was obviously moving enough units to sustain her own gallery. So, good for her. My world was more Lone Star tallboy, worried and B&W copy machine reproduction. One day I would like to open a Dutchslavetrade Gallery across the street from the Womack Gallery and bring the property value back down. Keep it Weird, Austin.

This is Alexandra. Yesterday was her birthday. She’s a whip-smart and humorous woman with a post-historic philosophy that I can only describe as “throwback/modern-science as old time religion-atheism belief-feminism/chauvinism-hope/despair-BASKETBALL…KILL THEM THEM ALL, let Allah and various style guides sort them out.” She also loves animals and is a life long vegetarian. As of today she is a 2L (yay!) at Hastings College of Law so she knows about the need to stay focused. Being that one of our conversations inspired Stay Focused Bitch, There’s A Lot Riding On This it was comme il faut for me to present her with this piece.

Mousetrap Catching Devil, 2000 40.5 cm x 50.5 cm acrylic on canvas
As far as painting, this is where it all began for me. Excluding two miserable monochromatic styrofoam 3D shape still lifes, Mousetrap Catching Devil is my first successful  painting on canvas still in existence.

This is Sonya. Rhode Island is famous for her. She’s a good-humored, effulgent and dedicated lady. She’s also a phenomenal chef, making waves and turning heads on a local and national level. Here’s a spiel about her from the website of  East Side Showroom , where she is executive chef.

Executive chef Sonya Cote’s cuisine has been described as rustic French with a soul food flare.  She supports the local food movement, buying products from Texas farms. These raw ingredients arrive fresh daily, delivered by farmers themselves which create an ever changing menu based upon seasonal availability. Sonya’s localvore practices use most or all parts of farm products, including breaking down whole fish & animals for delectables such as our charcuterie, stocks, soups, condiments & sauces.

That being said one of my favorite things about her is that she refers to rabbits, as in rabbits for cooking, as “bunnies” and it delights me to no end. Here’s a video from Chow.com demonstrating this practice. Her section starts at 3:26. Last winter Sonya invited me to her house to partake in a fine Christmas goose and I gave her this drawing from the Diving Pelicans series. I got the better end of the deal.

This is Erin. She’s a black hair beauty and a fairly significant nerd. Erin embodies nerddom in the classic sense. Years of  involvement with graphic novels, Star Trek, George R. R. Martin, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling et al, as well as an active interest in photography and collecting my work, have secured her status as a 2nd gen rogue/bard dual class:magic-user sub class: illusionist leader nerd of the highest order. Continuing on, she also wields a perspicacious wit and possess a caring nature…giving her +10 charisma, +10 rad.  Here she is pictured with WATFIFOU? No. 1, 2011.
